It is 1996 and the month of March. A meeting is being held in the Medical Association seminar rooms at Esplanaden, located in Copenhagen.
The first regular membership meeting was held half a year later, also in the Medical Association seminar rooms, which for years had been the setting for the association’s meetings, before we moved to Pilegården in Brønshøj. But before that, Ole Banke took a tour to Århus to advertise our new association at the Århus Amateur Photographic Club and to recruit members. A photo weekend in September was also organized - which was the early beginning of the present annual meetings.
The first member magazine was printed in 1996, almost simultaneously with the launch of the association. Already in 1998, the magazine had colour, starting at the front, which soon thereafter led to the entire sheet being in 4 colours.
Over the years, a couple of local groups were formed around the country. In Northern Jutland we have the NFD-North, with its own meeting schedule, in East Jutland we have East Jutland NFD, with somewhat more limited activity. Here in 2009/2010, there is also something forming in Fyn.
The most important event in the NFD calender is the annual meeting held during one weekend in various parts of the country. Here you can meet nature photographers and discuss nature photos from different rural areas. It is also the time for choosing the winners of the association’s yearly competition. Every two years, a foreign photographer is invited to attend the annual meeting, partly as speaker but more importantly as a judge in the yearly competition.
In 2009, NFD became a member of the IFWP, which is an international association of nature photographers. The association was represented at their annual meeting in Switzerland. 2009 was also the year that NFD held its first nature photo festival. The next festival is already being planned and will take place in 2011 in the same place.
